That is a good point Was, I saw a documentary about Frank DeMartini and Pablo Ortiz the other night called Heroes of the 88th Floor http://www.discoveryuk.com/the-loop/heroes-of-the-88th-floor/; they were Port Authority workers who personally rescued more than 75 people in the upper floors of the north tower. In addition, the people they rescued were inspired to help others on their way out.

September 11th, 2011- The Difference Between JW's and Reality
by OnTheWayOut ini can agree with some that say there have been plenty of tragedies worldwide where plenty more lives were lost.
so what was special about the loss experienced ten years ago on sept. 11th, 2001 in the united states?.
i might have a bias on this subject because i am a first responder in a different city.

July 15th WT out - Coming out Swinging at Apostates Hard
by LostGeneration inthis is one of the most aggressive watchtowers i think i have ever read.. four study articles on not "following the crowd" not following unrealities(page 13) not following false teachers, meaning apostates of course(p 15).
avoiding false teachers means "refusing to read their literature, watch tv programs that feature them, examine their web sites, or add comments to their blogs.
(para 7, pg 16).

Thank you OTWO, that does help me to understand.
@Broken Promises: I was struck by the fact that so many of the firefighters 10 years on looked 20 years older.

Question: What exactly could the scholars do to the WTB&TS in this case? Could they force a printed retraction?
This is what I had in mind. The trouble is, the WT is so insignificant as to be irrelevant to these people. If it was a well respected publication misquoting them, I'm sure they would be quick to demand a retraction.

Can I ask you because this question came to me when watching the Naudet brothers' documentary about NY fire fighters: how does a JW firefighter reconcile the 'close brotherhood' that clearly exists between American firefighters and the WT propaganda that worldly people are deserving of destruction and should be kept firmly at arms length?

So, is there any chance that any of these experts will hold the publishers of the Watchtower to account for the misrepresentation of their work, or will the WT get away with it, again?

http://www.thedaily.com/page/2011/09/09/090911-news-zawahiri-intraday/
The mastermind behind the terror plot announced yesterday was the man who filled Osama bin Laden’s shoes as al Qaeda’s new No. 1: Ayman al-Zawahiri.
In early August, Zawahiri personally recruited three terrorists to travel to the U.S. to perpetrate a string of car-bomb attacks on Washington, D.C., and New York City to coincide with the 10th anniversary of September 11, according to high-ranking sources in the counter-intelligence community who spoke with The Daily on condition of anonymity.
And they “may have met up with a small cell or other suspects,” the sources said.
Officials said they are acting on unverified intelligence from a single, “credible source.”
All three operatives speak fluent English. Two are believed to be American citizens, one of Egyptian descent and one of Yemeni descent, according to sources.
Zawahiri coordinated with Afghan Taliban to help smuggle the three Arab operatives to launch a string of attacks “in the U.S. and possibly Europe.”
They were instructed to carry out a car bomb-like attack in New York or Washington, but also were told “to be flexible in their attack,” sources said.
To reach the U.S., two of the operatives traveled to Pakistan through Iran, sources said. In Pakistan they met up with a third operative and traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan. In Kabul they “dropped and swapped” passports and other identification before traveling to Dubai. From there they traveled to the U.S.
Despite specifics about travel plans, officials said they do not know exactly whom they are looking for. No names were provided.
Asked about the plot this morning, Vice President Joe Biden told “Good Morning America” that there was “no smoking gun” thus far.
“We do have talk about using a car bomb. We’ve been told that was an intention ... from a credible source,” Biden said. “But we do not have confirmation of that.” -

You know what, this may sound perverse and I'm not wishing for a huge catastrophe but if all they can pull off 10 years after 9/11 is a truck bomb, it would be embarassing for them. Unless they can do something substantial, I don't think they'll do anything.
There's no accounting for the lone wolf operative though.

Stressful Session with Uber-Zealous Parents--The Mermaid needs a hug!
by Cadellin inokay, for those of you who don't know, i was raised jw by really great though uber-zealous parents.
i'm now an adult and have been inactive for about two years due a bunch of reasons, the primary one (or at least the one that got the ball rolling) being the pathological intellectual dishonesty of the wt in how it handles secular quotes and citations.
anyway, my parents are aware of all that and have left the issue alone for about the last year.

Anyway, it still left me feeling kind of lousy. So what do I do? My mother suggests "locking all my doubts in a room and just carrying on with Jehovah's organization, being part of the brotherhood and enjoying all the good things that the spiritual paradise offers."
That makes sense, as advice from someone in a cult.
My repl: "Yeah, but my conscience won't allow me to stand at someone's door and tell them that the human race has only been here for 6,000 years/we're in the time of the end and things have never been worse for the human race/ Noah's flood was for real/[fill in falsity of your choice]" She didn't have much to say in reply but it didn't matter b/c my father did most of the talking.
This is exactly what I'm planning to tell my mother because I have a situation coming up where she will expect me to go in field service with her. They don't know I've been inactive for 2 years (although I think they suspect it, hence this engineered 'opportunity' for field service).
I really feel for you.
